Overview
Disney Pixar movies are almost always a hit — if it includes a catchy musical number, you can bet it’ll spread like wildfire. You probably remember when almost every kid was singing the song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (in fact, it hit #1 on US Billboards in 2021) and it came from a very popular movie, Encanto.
So what is Encanto about? The movie is about a family that lives in the mountains of Colombia — but it’s no ordinary family. They live in a magical place called Encanto (hence the name) and every member has a different magical power. All of them, that is, except Mirabel. The story follows Mirabel as she realizes that she is destined to save their beloved magical house and family from destruction. Ultimately, she does save the family and she eventually finds her place among them, despite her lack of magical powers.
Harmful Content ❗️
There is no explicitly harmful content to worry about in Encanto. Some of the themes hit on some deep notes that, depending on your kid’s age, may go over their head. Mirabel faces conflicts with family members due to her lack of magical powers, which results in some turmoil. Specifically with the grandmother of the family, Abuela, who holds everyone (including Mirabel) to very high, unrealistic expectations. These things cause some arguments and friction throughout the movie and it turns out to be the reason the magic is almost destroyed at the end of the movie.
Language
There is no profanity in Encanto, besides slight name-calling between siblings.
Sex
There are no sexual references in Encanto, as is the case with most Disney Pixar movies.
Violence
The violence is not overt in Encanto, but some scenes may be intense for young kids. When Mirabel goes to find Bruno (who was outcasted due to his power of predicting the family) and when the house is destroyed, these scenes are dark and suspenseful which some younger kids may find scary.
Positive Value 💫
Encanto does a wonderful job of valuing strong family bonds, as well as the individuality of each member. Kids can find a great role model in Mirabel who is a lovable, clumsy, and determined young girl. She never gives up on trying to find her place in the family and is not afraid to do what is right.
Not to mention, the animation is colorful, bright, and visually engaging for all viewers, not just kids. And of course, lots of kids will get the most fun out of singing along to the catchy tunes. They may discover their love of music and singing through movies like Encanto!
So, should my kid watch it?
Yes! There’s no doubt your family will enjoy this musical and magical Disney Pixar movie!
