Overview
Remember playing tag in the backyard with your friends as a kid? Nowadays, kids get to play the same game of tag with an interesting technological twist. Gorilla Tag is a virtual reality game where players embody a gorilla and play an immersive game of tag with other gorillas. The goal of the game is as simple as a regular game of tag — either avoid being tagged by the “it” gorilla or try to tag a gorilla if you’re “it.”
As you can imagine, a game that has you jumping around the living room to impersonate a gorilla is hilarious and an immediate hit — it’s one of the most successful and popular VR games to date. But as with any popular game, app, or device, let’s review some of its potential risks for your kids.
Harmful Content ❗️
The game itself has very little inappropriate content. The visuals are essentially just gorillas running around in a forested area with Minecraft-esque animation. However, parents still need to be aware because Gorilla Tag is an online multiplayer game. A key part of the game is the voice chat where you can hear other players talking when their avatar is close to yours.
Tons of parents have quickly realized how inappropriate and vulgar the in-game chat can be for Gorilla Tag. Other players can get aggressive and start bullying each other during play. Luckily, the chat can easily be muted and played without listening to other players.
The other potential danger with Gorilla Tag and many VR games is the physical aspect, as kids could easily hurt themselves. The VR headset can be disorienting and hard to stay aware of your surroundings, especially if you’re flailing around pretending to be a gorilla. Between the in-game chat and the physical risks of Gorilla Tag, it’s recommended that parents supervise their kids while they play.
Language
The game itself does not have any concerning language. But again, you can likely expect profanity and generally inappropriate comments through the in-game chat.
Sex
There is no sexual content in Gorilla Tag.
Violence
This game does not have any violence or gory content. The game can get intense just as a real game of tag can be exhilarating, but it’s not considered a graphic or violent game.
Positive Value 💫
Video games generally promote increased hand-eye coordination and problem-solving skills. But Gorilla Tag has the added benefit of encouraging real, physical activity. Ask anyone who’s played, and they’ll tell you it can feel like a genuine workout! Plus, Gorilla Tag is an accessible game, easy to pick up for any player. This means the whole family, no matter their skill level, can join in on the fun.
So, should my kid play it?
Gorilla Tag is a great game to play for ages 10 and up! Again, we just suggest keeping the chat muted and be sure you have VR parental controls in place, depending on your child’s age.
