Updated March 6, 2025

Overview

Overall Rating: ⭐ 3.5 / 5

Recommended Age: 9 and up

Based on the popular book series by Lemony Snicket (a pen name of Daniel Handler), the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events stars Neil Patrick Harris as the villainous Count Olaf. The show is about three orphans who are determined to solve the mystery of their parents’ sudden deaths, but Count Olaf is determined to thwart their plans and get the children’s inheritance for himself. With a fascinating plot and whimsical characters, this show has been a hit with tons of families. But is it a good fit for your family? Let’s find out!

Harmful Content ❗️

Rating:

This show can be described as dark and suspenseful, but in the same way that Nancy Drew or The Addams Family has a bit of an edge to it. The book series that the show is based on was targeted towards a younger audience, so the show does the same. There are some instances of drinking and quick adult references that mostly will go over kids heads. Younger or more sensitive audiences may not enjoy the dark or fantasy aspects of the show.

Language

Count Olaf expresses the occasional “hell” or “damn.”

Sex

There is no sexual content in this show. Count Olaf attempts to marry Violet (one of the children) but only for the purpose of securing their inheritance — there are no sexual themes or insinuations around it.

Violence

The premise of the show is that the children’s parents die in a tragic and mysterious death. Other characters face similarly tragic deaths, such as one getting eaten by a lion. However, none of these deaths are ever shown in a detailed or gory fashion.

Positive Value 💫

Rating:

A Series of Unfortunate Events has a lot of positive themes of integrity, tenacity, and loyalty. The three children always have each other’s backs — no matter what. In all of the challenges they face, they show resourcefulness and courage. And the cherry on top is that all these themes are presented in such a creative and entertaining way that it’ll keep kids hooked on the story and characters.

So, should my kid watch it?

We’d say this show is appropriate for ages 9 and up! Be sure to take into account your own child and what they can handle, but generally this show is appropriate for most kids.
