The Emoji Movie: A Movie Review For Parents

Updated March 6, 2025

Overview

Overall Rating: ⭐ 4.0 / 5

Recommended Age: 6 and up

The emojis we know and love today became popular in the 2010s and have only become more and more integrated into our internet language. So it was only natural to put these familiar emoticons on the big screen!

The Emoji Movie features a killer cast, including T.J. Miller, Anna Faris, James Corden, Maya Rudolph, and Jennifer Coolidge. The movie follows one particular emoji named Gene (T.J. Miller), who is the “meh” emoji. This is a family-friendly movie that is generally great for all ages, but let’s take a closer look to ensure it’s a fit for your family.

Harmful Content ❗️

Rating:

This movie has very little harmful content, although some of the humor could be considered crude or just immature. You can expect some classic poop jokes and some subtle adult jokes that are likely to go over most kids’ heads. Depending on your family’s values, this kind of humor may not be the best fit, but generally most families find this movie appropriate for kids.

Language

There is some slight insulting language such as “shut up” or “stupid.” There is one stance of a character saying, “Oh, sh-”, implying a curse word but it’s not actually said.

Sex

The movie has a couple of sexual innuendo jokes, but nothing explicit, and most kids probably wouldn’t even pick up on it. Other than that, there is no sexual content in the movie.

Violence

The violence in the movie is minimal, aside from some slapstick comedy and some apps being threatened with getting “deleted.” Overall, The Emoji Movie is not considered violent or intense.

Positive Value 💫

Rating:

Through the main character Gene and his quest to truly find his place in Textopolis, the audience sees themes of self-acceptance and the importance of embracing one’s unique qualities. Although Gene is supposed to be the “meh” emoji, he experiences a range of emotions that contradict this label. The movie also has strong themes of friendship, as Gene learns the importance of having trustworthy friends to face challenges.

So, should my kid watch it?

Taking into account the type of humor this movie has and your family’s values, we’d say that this movie is appropriate for most kids, ages 6 and up.
