Overview
Marvel fans have been anxiously anticipating this new Captain America movie as it’s the first in the series to follow Sam Wilson — and not Steve Rogers — as the new Captain America. If you’re familiar with any of the Marvel movies, you’ll find that this latest addition to the franchise follows a similar formula as the ones we’ve seen before. But if you’re unfamiliar or just want to know more details, we’ve got everything parents need to know right here about Captain America: Brave New World.
Harmful Content ❗️
Parents should know that Captain America: Brave New World includes plot points such as mind control, human experimentation, and wrongful incarceration. Additionally, much of the movie centers around Sam Wilson navigating some very political waters. With the world government debating over “enhanced individuals” and a new celestial element known as “adamantium,” some of the plot may go over some kids’ heads. But generally, most kids will still be able to enjoy it.
Language
Some adult language such as “damn,” “hell,” and “sh*t.”
Sex
There is no sexual content in this movie. There are no romantic plot lines, either.
Violence
As expected for any superhero movie, Captain America: Brave New World has all the classic fight scenes. This includes hand-to-hand combat, gun shots, car chases, aircraft battles, and more. Some characters get bloodied and severely injured. One character gets shot out of the sky, resulting in hospitalization. The movie is not generally graphic or gory, but there are many life-threatening and intense scenes. Lastly, there are some alien-like characters that may be unsettling for young or sensitive audiences.
Positive Value 💫
Sam Wilson struggles to feel like he measures up to be the man that fills Steve Rogers’ place. In his struggle, the audience learns that being a hero doesn’t mean being perfect — it means doing your best with the best intentions for those around you. Wilson displays countless acts of humility and bravery as he fights to uncover truth and set things right.
The movie also explores how people aren’t always just good or just bad — particularly in the character of the fictional American president, Thaddeus Ross. In much of the movie, Ross makes poor moral decisions for selfish reasons. But Wilson chooses to understand why Ross is acting this way and makes a point to extend kindness to him.
So, should my kid watch it?
Due to the violence and political plot, we’d recommend this movie for ages 12 and up. Of course, use discretion as you know your child best.
