Is Voila Safe? A Voila App Review for Parents
Recommended Age
6 and up
Overview
Fun selfie filters are always a hit with kids, and the Voila app is no exception! Using AI, Voila takes photos and transforms them into super-stylized cartoons. Users can pick from lots of different options, from Disney villains to renaissance portraits. There’s a paid version that removes ads and shortens wait times for processing, but apart from that, the app only does one thing: photo filters. Keep in mind, however, that apps like Voila are often used to create images that kids then share on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
Harmful Content 😲
There’s no chat or messaging feature on Voila, and the only content it provides is filtered versions of photos your kid uploads. The only potential negative effect of this app is a distorted sense of self. Selfie filters like these can minimize real-life features like double chins, skin blemishes, and more. This could lead to your kid feeling bad about their IRL image.
Predation 🚨
There are no chat or messaging features on Voila, so predation dangers are near zero.
Positive Value 💙
Voila can provide a ton of fun for your kid — especially if you play around with it together. You can even upload photos of friends and family and share them, which is sure to get a laugh.
Privacy 🔒
The app has a strong privacy policy, so the only way someone will have access to photos made using the app will be if your child shares them or their phone gets hacked.
Parental Controls ✅
There aren’t any parental controls for Voila because the app only does one thing: filter photos. But if you’re worried about your kid’s screen time, Bark lets you:
- Block Voila on iOS and Android entirely, if needed.
- Manage when your child can use Voila throughout the day.
So, should my kid download it?
Probably! As far as apps go, the Voila app is fairly safe. We just recommend having a conversation about body image and realistic expectations so kids know what’s real and what’s just for pretend.
