Is Amazon Music Safe? An Amazon Music Review for Parents
Recommended Age
13 and up
Overview
Amazon music is a popular music streaming platform similar to Spotify. Users can log in using their Amazon Prime account to make playlists and shuffle popular songs ad-free, or they can pay for Amazon Music Unlimited to listen to any song or album in any order.
Along with songs and curated playlists, Amazon Music also offers an array of podcasts to choose from. Here’s everything you need to know about the streaming platform and whether it’s appropriate for kids.
Harmful Content 😲
Almost any artist can be found on Amazon Music, so your child may encounter songs with explicit language and lyrics about sex, drugs, violence, and other adult themes. Toggling off explicit music in the settings can help filter out this content, but it will not remove songs with adult themes.
In addition to explicit songs, Amazon Music also shares podcasts that may have inappropriate content. Some podcasts simply discuss adult themes, while others are devoted entirely to subjects like audio pornography that consists of sexual noises and sounds.
Predation 🚨
Amazon Music doesn’t give listeners the ability to message one another, so there is a low risk of predation. It’s also not necessary to include any personally identifiable information and accounts are automatically private unless the user changes this in settings.
Positive Value 💙
Music is beneficial for a child’s development and is a great way for kids to express themselves. Kids can stream music to help them focus on homework or to pump them up while they exercise. Amazon Music offers plenty of appropriate, family-friendly songs, and educational podcasts that kids love.
Privacy 🔒
Amazon Music lets users stay completely anonymous, meaning your kid doesn’t have to add their real name or a profile photo. Their account is automatically private, so no one can follow them and see their activity, and a public account can easily be made private again.
Parental Controls ✅
Amazon offers parents a parent dashboard where they can set time limits for their child, see their child’s screen-time, and toggle off explicit content for Amazon Music (this feature is also available in the app settings). Besides these, there are no monitoring features, so it’s difficult to determine if your child is listening to mature music. Luckily, Bark can help you stay in control by letting you:
- Block the Amazon Music app completely, if needed.
- Manage when your child can use the Amazon Music app throughout the day.
So, should my kid download it?
Bark recommends parents exercise caution when allowing their kids to use Amazon Music, due to the overtly sexual content. Many kids may use the app and never come across an issue, but the potential is still there. We suggest having a conversation with your child, though it’s often uncomfortable, about what they may encounter and what they should do in that situation.
