Is Monopoly Go! Safe? A Monopoly Go! App Review for Parents

Overall Rating:
⭐ 3.0 / 5

Overview

Overall Rating: ⭐ 3.0 / 5

Recommended Age: 12 and up

Monopoly Go! is the popular digital version of the classic board game but with more ways to play, including extra prizes and additional levels. Players get a limited number of rolls each day and earn money by landing on property. Landing on a railroad lets you take money from a random player, but this doesn’t involve direct communication with them.

Once a player has enough money, they can start building or expanding property. Building property increases a player’s net worth and awards them extra prizes. Monopoly Go! even lets kids choose a classic token from the beloved game. Here’s our full Monopoly Go! review.

Harmful Content 😲

Rating:

The riskiest part of Monopoly Go! is the ability to connect to various social networks, like Facebook, X/Twitter, and Discord. The game encourages players to invite friends from their contacts and social media platforms to earn more points. While this won’t directly expose your child to harmful content, they could log into these platforms and run into explicit content.

Leaderboards are also public on the app. There’s no way to message other players, but profile pictures and usernames may be explicit.

Predation 🚨

Rating:

There’s no chat feature on Monopoly Go!, so strangers can’t message your child. One danger are the links to social media sites, including Discord. If your child logs into Discord through this link, they can join servers with hundreds of strangers. Often, predators pretend to be children on Discord to earn other kids’ trust.

Positive Value 💙

Rating:

Apart from leaderboards and social media links, Monopoly Go! is a simple, fun game for kids. If they do connect and play with trusted contacts, kids can compete with each other to earn money, badges, and build more property. Gameplay is simple and straightforward, and players have a limited number of roles and funds so they can’t spend all day on the app.

Privacy 🔒

Rating:

Profiles are automatically anonymous, and they can stay this way if your child uses a fake name with no profile photo. This keeps other players from seeing your child’s information on the leaderboard. If your child ignores the links to other social media platforms, no one else will know they’re playing the game.

Parental Controls ✅

Rating:

Monopoly Go! doesn’t offer any parental controls, so there’s no way for parents to set time limits for the game or make sure their kid doesn’t follow the social media links. However, Bark can help you stay in control by letting you:

  • Block Monopoly Go! completely, if needed.
  • Manage when your child can use Monopoly Go! throughout the day.

So, should my kid download it?

As long as your child doesn’t follow the social media and Discord links, Monopoly Go! can be an entertaining game. It’s easy for kids to stay anonymous on the app and there’s no way for strangers to follow your child. It doesn’t involve much strategy and probably won’t add a ton of value to your child’s life, but it also won’t take up hours of your child’s time since they get a limited number of rolls.
