Overview
Anyone with a deep appreciation for video games will tell you that the characters and story arc of certain games are just as important as it is for a movie or TV show. You won’t find this with games like Fortnite, but for games like Genshin Impact, that’s exactly what draws players to it.
In this anime-style, adventure role-playing game, players interact with mystical creatures and elemental magic, all while completing their noble mission. Players can play on Android, iOS, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Windows.
So, is this fantastical world safe for kids? We took a deep dive into Genshin Impact, looking for anything parents may need to be concerned about. And we put all the details here, let’s take a look!
Harmful Content ❗️
The story begins with two interstellar-traveling siblings who find themselves in a face-off with an unknown god. In a spectacular battle, the siblings fight this god but ultimately, one of the siblings is taken captive. This is where the player chooses which sibling to play as. Then they start their adventure to get back to the lost sibling.
With this premise, you tell the game is pretty wholesome. Throughout the game, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any explicit or adult content. But there are still a couple of things to take note of before you let your kid play.
The first thing is the chat feature. However, it’s not exactly a free-for-all of kids chatting with any other Genshin player. The chat feature only unlocks once you reach a certain level of the game. Up until this point, it’s a single-player game. Then, you can unlock multiplayer gameplay with an accompanying chat feature. To add other players, you need their “UID” number which is assigned to each player’s account. Be sure you talk to your child about only sharing their UID number with people they know and trust in real life.
Lastly, as with many games, there are some in-game purchase options even though it’s technically free to play. So don’t forget to check on your child’s spending in the game and consider blocking it if needed.
Language
The game itself does not have any harmful language. With the chat feature, kids could potentially encounter inappropriate content depending on who they have added as friends. But the game has built-in filters that block explicit content. As we know, filters are not fool-proof, but it does keep a significant amount of adult content out of the chat.
One note about modern-day video game culture — it’s very common for kids to not only play games but also seek out others who play the game on platforms like YouTube and Twitch. Especially for “open-world” games (where players can move their avatars freely throughout the game), YouTubers love to make their avatars do fun things outside of the guided storyline. Unfortunately, some of these YouTubers put an inappropriate twist even on clean games. So remember to keep an eye on what video game YouTubers your child likes to watch.
Sex
Genshin Impact does not have any sexual content, besides the fact that some female characters are shapely and scantily clad. Some characters may have a small amount of cleavage showing, but it’s minimal.
Violence
The game does involve fighting and battles, but the violence is not gory. When a character dies, you can hardly see any blood. The animations of the battles are much more fantastical, not gruesome.
Positive Value 💫
Genshin Impact is a great game for kids with a big imagination and appreciation for a good story. And a bonus if they’re already an anime fan! Genshin Impact’s storyline is not only easy to get invested in, but it also has many positive themes such as the importance of willpower and friendship. With so many video games that can understandably make some parents nervous with gratuitous violence, immoral themes, and the like, Genshin Impact is much more kid and parent-friendly!
So, should my kid play it?
This is a great game for ages 10 and up! Now that you have all the specific details, you’ll be able to make the best decision for your child when it comes to letting them play Genshin Impact.
