Knives Out: A Movie Review For Parents

Updated July 25, 2024

Overview

Overall Rating: ⭐ 3.0 / 5

Recommended Age: 13 and up

If your family loves a classic whodunit, this movie should surely be on your family movie night list if you have older kids! Knives Out is a popular murder mystery movie that came out in 2019. With a star-studded cast including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jaime Lee Curtis, and more, the movie was an immediate hit upon its release. And since then, they’ve even made a sequel called Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Seeing as this movie was not necessarily made with kids as its target audience, you can expect some adult content throughout the movie. So we put everything you need to know about that here so you know if it’s actually a good fit for your kids to watch. Let’s jump in!

Harmful Content ❗️

Rating:

As the movie is a murder mystery, you can already expect some of its content to be less than wholesome. Without giving away any spoilers — there is talk about murder, drugs, affairs, suicide, and other adult topics. But these topics are handled fairly tactfully, so as not to distract from the intriguing mystery of the story.

Language

The movie contains some strong language, including occasional uses of profanity such as the F-word and others.

Sex

Knives Out has very little sexual content. The movie plot itself does not have much of a romantic bent in the first place. There are a few instances where characters discuss or hint at sexual themes, but there are no explicit scenes.

Violence

Some violent scenes are central to the story, including the main death that drives the plot. However, the scenes are not depicted in an overly graphic or gory way. Some examples include a somewhat bloody death and one character attacking another with a knife at one point. Some of these scenes may be unsettling for younger or sensitive viewers, but again, the film portrays them more implicitly rather than explicitly.

Positive Value 💫

Rating:

Aside from being an exceptionally entertaining movie, Knives Out has a strong heart behind it — being compassionate and kind comes out on top, even when it’s risky or easier to act out of self-preservation. When accusations fly high, it is the ones with strong, good character that see a happy ending. This is an overall great message for kids and a reminder to do the right thing no matter what the circumstances are.

So, should my kid watch it?

For ages 13 and up, we’d say this is a great movie! Remember, you know your child best and know if their maturity level can handle things like excessive language and moderate violence.
